Coming December 2012! The Great Gatsby 3D. New film by Baz Lurhmann. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire. Can this possibly be better than Clayton’s 1974 version with Redford, Farrow and Waterston?
Eckleburg was founded in 2010 as an online and print literary and arts journal. We take our title from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and include the full archives of our predecessor Moon Milk Review. Our aesthetic is eclectic, literary mainstream to experimental. We appreciate fusion forms including magical realist, surrealist, meta- realist and realist works with an offbeat spin. We value character-focused storytelling and language and welcome both edge and mainstream with punch aesthetics. We like humor that explores the gritty realities of world and human experiences. Our issues include original content from both emerging and established writers, poets, artists and comedians such as authors, Roxane Gay, Rick Moody, Cris Mazza, Steve Almond, Stephen Dixon, poets, Moira Egan and David Wagoner and actor/comedian, Zach Galifianakis.
It’s time to reread one of those classics. Unfortunately, we
will have to wait a few more months to see “The Great Gatsby” on the
big screen. The original Christmas release has been postponed to summer 2013. Hopefully
the extra time helps Baz Luhrmann make something as incredible as “Moulin Rouge”
and “Romeo + Juliet.” Though, I wonder how Fitzgerald would react to a
soundtrack along the lines of “Moulin Rouge.” Are we in for a whole number
about the Eckleburg billboard?
Looks like this will be exciting for sure. I am definitely interested to see 3D used in classic drama like this. My only concern is that the film will rely too much on the effects to create the feeling of hysteria. Farrow did such a good job conveying her character’s tormented emotional state in 1974. From the looks of the trailer, though, DiCaprio will be a much more explosive Gatsby.
